While they're not even actually coffee pods in the traditional sense, Green Mountain Coffee Pods are one of the most well known brands out there. Actually, they are K-Cups. This means they'll only work in a K-Cup brewer, which is made be Keurig. We won't be talking about traditional coffee pods at all, so if that is all you're looking for, you should look elsewhere. If you own, or plan to buy a Keurig K-Cup machine, though, read onward.

A Brief History Of Green Mountain Coffee

With a name like that, you would think that the company was rather old and from Ireland or something. In reality, Green Mountain Coffee was founded in Vermont in 1981. This makes them very new to the coffee world, especially with older companies having been around since the mid 1800s. The company actually started as a tiny cafe in rural Waitsfield, Vermont, where they roasted and served coffee. It didn't take long before local restaurants began clamoring to buy their fresh ground coffee to serve in their own establishments.

What Makes Green Mountain Special?

In such a competitive industry, that this company grew so fast is nothing short of amazing. So, how did they manage to make such an impact? It probably had a lot to do with their strange mixture of selections and flavors. Since the big guys pretty much have your average decaf and house blend type offerings locked up, these guys went a completely different direction. Some of their blends are fairly mundane, with breakfast blend, French roast, and "Our Blend", which is their version of original, mixed in with their greater than 100 various coffees.

Your Pod Coffee Maker And Green Mountain Coffees

Unless you have a Keurig K-Cup Brewer, Green Mountain Coffee Pods will not work in your pod coffee maker. This company does not, and probably will not ever make a more generic coffee pod, such as what would fit in the Home Cafe pod coffee makers. This is because they actually own Keurig. In fact, since Green Mountain purchased Keurig in 2006, it's probably not much of a stretch to say that they are is the reason for the success of K-Cups and the Keurig brewers in general. If you're into making your own coffee pods, however, you could always buy their loose coffee to go in your coffee pod machine.

Does Green Mountain Make Anything Other Than Coffee?

Although you may have to look under some of their other labels, Green Mountain does produce items other than coffee. Their hot chocolates are under the name of Cafe Escapes, while their teas live under the Celestial Seasonings name. However, just like with their coffees, these can only be had as a K-Cup, so unless you own or intend to buy one, you'll have to go with a different brand.

Are you one of the many people who find something special in outdoor jobs and businesses? You get fresh air and sunshine, good healthy exercise, and--depending on the nature of the work--you get a day off when there is a blizzard or other storm. If you like the idea of outdoor work but haven't yet found the right position, here are some options you might not have considered.

1. Doing Wildlife Surveys

Animals need to be counted for a variety of reasons, including tracking the results of hunting, pollution, and habitat elimination. You can volunteer to help organizations that do the surveys, and this can be a good way to get some experience and see if you like the work. To get paid you'll often need bachelor's degree in wildlife conservation. Higher pay comes with more experience and organizational positions, although the latter will mean more indoor work.

2. Surveying

The job is one of careful measurements and working with precision instruments. In other words, you'll need some training and possibly a college degree for some positions. But you get to spend much of your time in open fields and the pay can be very good. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics says the average salary for a surveyor in 2008 was ,980, and those who work in more specialized fields can command a premium for their services.

3. Picking Apples

Many small apple orchards in northern states like Michigan and Wisconsin do not have a ready supply of labor when the time for harvest comes. The picking season varies for different varieties of apples, but is generally from early September to late October. You need to be physically fit for this work, because you'll be climbing up and down ladders while carrying up to forty pounds of fruit. Often small orchard owners will pay you by the box or pound, and the most you can expect to make is not much over minimum wage when you start. After some experience a picker can make up to per hour.

4. Cleaning Up Roadkill

Somebody has to get dead deer, dogs and other animals off the roads and highways so they do not become a health hazard. Though there are occasionally employment positions doing this, typically small one-man businesses bid for the work and are paid by states or municipalities. It isn't a nice job, but you will get exercise and it is an outdoor business.

5. Selling Wildflowers

Provided you check with the administrators of public lands to see what flowers are protected, you can pick and sell bouquets of wildflowers. You get to work outdoors and your product cost is zero, making for nice profits if you find a good market. By the way, sometimes small starts lead to big business, even with outdoor jobs. !±8± Relieve Sinus Congestion and Allergies With Essential Oils, Herbs, and Diet

Allergies can create sinus and ear congestion that can lead to infection and great discomfort.

Essential Oils

Essential oils can be very helpful.

Add 1 teaspoon of eucalyptus oil in a small pot of water-bring to boil, then reduce burner to simmer to diffuse the essence of the eucalyptus. Be sure to check water level after 10-15 minutes. You can diffuse oils up to one hour. Refresh the pot with more oil after one hour. This method is particularly helpful for alleviating congested sinuses and relieving scratchy, dry throat due to allergies because it puts moisture in the air.

Also, you can put several drops of eucalyptus drops on a cotton ball and insert into ear lightly (not deep into the canal as it can get stuck or cause infections). The fumes from the eucalyptus will then penetrate the sinuses deeply. Keep in the ears for no longer than 15 minutes. Myrtle essential oil natural antihistamines-when applied to cotton balls and placed lightly in the ears, it can also provide relief.

Or you can add 1 teaspoon of either oil to water to diffuse in a manner similar to the method for diffusing eucalyptus oil above.

Dietary Help

Reducing sugar in the diet, diary products, and foods that aggravate inflammation such as peppers, tomatoes and other members of the nightshade family, can help. Ginger, cinnamon, and cardamom help to clear phlegm naturally. Celestial Seasonings makes a wonderful spice tea called "Bengal Spice" that is caffeine free and contains many of the spices associated with clearing mucus.

Herbal Help

Chinese herbs such as "pe min kan wan" or "bi yan pian" can help increase circulation and reduce dampness (mucus) to relieve symptoms. They also act as natural antihistamines. Nettle leaf extract is also a natural antihistamine.

A trained herbalist can also formulate a custom tea to match your specific body constitution to help balance the immunity system to minimize allergic reactions. Keep in mind that unlike pharmaceutical antihistamines, it takes three to seven days to see the results with herbs as they work more gently and slowly. Thus, they do not have side effects such as excessive dryness or drowsiness.

Many clients take astragalus or echinacea to stimulate their immunity systems. However, allergic reactions are about the immunity system being over active. So, I do not recommend taking astragalus, echinacea, or other immuno-stimulants when allergic reactions are present, as symptoms may a increase.

Irrigation

Many of my clients have found neti pot irrigation helpful during the oak or cedar season for this method washes away the pollen from the mucus membranes. The key is preparing a very mild saline solution and using warm (not hot or cold) water. When done correctly, irrigation can relieve congestion, but when done incorrectly it can drive infection deeper or create congestion.

After performing irrigation, I find it very helpful to bend over from the waist and twist from side to side to help the excess water drain out, then blow nose very gently. When done properly, irrigation should not sting or add to the sensation of congestion.

If you feel any fullness or increased congestion after irrigation, put eucalyptus oil (two to three drops) on a cotton ball that has been moistened with witch hazel, into the ears. Witch hazel is an astringent so can help to draw out excess fluid-but do not use in irrigation solutions or it will irritate passages.

Tilt head, by placing right ear to shoulder encouraging fluids to drain into the cotton ball. Then tilt the left ear to shoulder and allow fluids to drain. Remove the cotton balls immediately.
